Colorado Avalanche hit by massive update at practice, sending shockwaves through the locker room just days before training camp officially gets underway.

Wednesday's informal Avalanche skate featured Valeri Nuchushkin's frustration, Brent Burns' slick hands, and Scott Wedgewood needing a hand.

Colorado Avalanche players rocked by massive update at practice.

Aarif Deen from Colorado Hockey Now writes that for weeks, players have been gradually hitting the ice at Family Sports in Centennial, with Wedgewood becoming the lastest addition on Sept. 10.
He and Trent Miner split time in net as a mix of Avalanche regulars, Colorado Eagles skater, and rookie ran through drills and shooting reps.
"Media Day is next week, but I got a chance to chat with Wedgewood for a hot second after he flagged me down for a favor. He needed pegs to set up the net for 2-on-2 drills. I obliged, he thanked me with a fist bump and smiled when I jokingly asked if that earned me an exclusive one-on-one with him. He assured me I would have one when the time came." -Deen

Among the veterans on the ice were Brock Nelson, Artturi Lehkonen, Burns, and Nichushkin. Nelson and Nichushkin worked on passing and shooting together, while Burns showed his experience by skating circles around younger players during 2-on-2 drills.
"The 30-year-old Russian displayed his competitive edge by throwing his stick into the boards and slamming it a few times after a couple of unsuccessful sequences. He is a passionate player, whether in an informal skate or a playoff game, which makes him an exceptional competitor.

Lehkonen - Nelson - Nichushkin is one second-line version head coach Jared Bednar played last season, and fans will likely see it again this season. As for what the bottom six will look like on opening night, that remains a bit of a mystery." -Deen

Logan O'Connor will miss the start of the season after hip surgery, leaving the Avalanche's bottom six in flux. A third line of Joel Kiviranta, Jack Drury, Ross Colton is possible, while Victor Olofsson and Drury or Parker Kelly figure on the fourth line.
The open spot could be filled by a standout from rookie camp, which begins Friday against Utah and continues Sunday vs. Vegas.
