The Vegas Golden Knights have brought back the veteran forward on a one-year contract worth $2 million, locking him in before he could hit unrestricted free agency.
Avalanche rival sign star forward to an extension.
According to TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston, the contract includes a no-trade clause.
Smith, 34, wrapped up last season with the Golden Knights after being acquired from the New York Rangers in a trade that spent forward
Brendan Brisson and a draft pick the other way just before the trade deadline.
"He had 13 goals and 40 points in 79 games split between the Rangers and Golden Knights and added three goals and four points in 11 playoff games before his team was eliminated by the Edmonton Oilers in the second round." -TSN.ca
Smith played a key role in helping the Golden Knights capture their first Stanley Cup in franchise history in 2023, tallying four goals and 14 points across 22 playoff games. Back in 2018, during Vegas' inaugural season, he also made a significant impact with five goals and 22 points in 20 postseason contests on route to their first Stanley Cup Final appearance.
Selected 69th overall by the Dallas Stars in the 2009 NHL Draft, Smith has accumulated 226 goals and 553 points over 919 career games. His NHL journey has included stints with the Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, Florida Panthers, Golden Knights, Pittsburgh Penguins, and New York Rangers.
We'll have to wait and see if the veteran forward still has some gas in the tank, as he nears the end of his playing career.
