The Colorado Avalanche are reportedly exploring the possibility of a reunion with star goalie and unrestricted free agent Alexander Georgiev, who previously played a key role between the pipes for the team.
The Avalanche would be wise to explore a reunion with Georgiev as they aim to shore up their goaltending depth ahead of a crucial campaign.
Avalanche eyeing reunion with star goalie.
Nestor Quixtan from Mile High Sticking writes that the Avalanche are in need of goaltending depth, particularly at the AHL level, while Georgiev may be eyeing one last shot at sticking in the NHL, making a short-term reunion a logical move for both sides.
"Georgiev is coming off a three-year, $10.2 million contract signed in 2022. He was expected to take over from Darcy Kuemper as the Avalanche's goalie of the future. The plan was for Georgiev to lead Colorado to more Stanley Cup championships. That didn't happen, of course, and landed Georgiev in the proverbial doghouse as he struggled to be that number-one goalie." -Quixtan
Although Georgiev could potentially return to San Jose next season, the Sharks don't appear eager to bring him back. With Yaroslav Askarov likely to take over as the starter and Alex Nedeljkovic expected to handle a significant share of the duties, there may not be much room left for Georgiev in their plans.
"So, a return to Colorado could be beneficial to both Georgiev and the team. The club clearly needs goaltending depth, and Georgiev needs another shot. Georgiev's likely destination would be the Colorado Eagles. He would be a solid upgrade as the starter there, while providing an experienced third-string option in case of injury." -Quixtan
Is a Georgiev reunion in Colorado likely? It's certainly not out of the question, and it could become more plausible as the offseason unfolds. While there's been no confirmed contact between the two sides so far, don't be surprised if discussions quietly begin behind the scenes in the coming weeks.
