The Colorado Avalanche appear primed to take over the NHL's top spot following a major setback for the reigning Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, who have been dealt devastating news regarding star forward Matthew Tkachuk.

Tkachuk is projected to miss the opening months of the 2025-25 NHL season after undergoing offseason surgery.

Panthers' star forward Matthew Tkachuk set to miss significant time next NHL season.

Antonio Losada from Athlon Sports writes that NHL insider David Pagnotta reported that the 27-year-old, who had been uncertain about whether surgery was the right choice, underwent a procedure "a few weeks ago" to repair a torn adductor and a sports hernia.
"On the negative side of the news, Tkachuk is projected to face a recovery timeline lasting months, with his return not coming until January at the earliest, per Pagnotta." -Losada
The timeline shared by Pagnotta raises concerns not only about Tkachuk's return for the second half of the regular season but also about his potential participation in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, which kick off on Feb. 6.
Tkachuk's recovery timeline could stretch close to that date, potentially complicating Team USA's roster plans if he misses the tournament, which will feature NHL players for the first time since 2014.
"Tkachuk's recovery timeline and his $9.5 million cap hit make him eligible to be placed on long-term injured reserve (LTIR)." -Losada

However, the situation also presents a future challenge the Panthers will need to manage carefully. Once Tkachuk is cleared to return, Florida will have to make room to accommodate his contract on the roster.
