Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche has the record for the most overtime goals in franchise history. With the pace he is on, it'll be almost impossible for anyone to catch him.
Nathan MacKinnon's overtime goal record makes a strong case for him as one of the greatest of all time.
Graham Tiedtke of Mile High Sticking reported recently on the greatness of Nathan MacKinnon through his overtime goal record.
"Through 870 career games, MacKinnon has 14 overtime buzzer-beaters. In the 2017-18 season, he had his career-high of three, which is also tied for best in franchise history with Tyson Barrie, David Jones, Cale Makar, and Mikko Rantanen. More recently, in the 2021-22 season, Makar had three and Mikko Rantanen also had three in the 2022-23 season." -Tiedtke
When we look at the list of the people under him we have Milan Hejeduk at 9, Gabriel Landeskog and Joe Sakic at 7, and David Jones and Cale Makar at 6. When you have double the overtime goals of Joe Sakic, there is something special going on.
"We already know how much of a superstar Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon is. He's one of two of the best players currently on the team, and one of the best in team history. MacKinnon has proven that he's also the best player in the entire league, at least as far as skaters go." -Tiedtke
While we all acknowledge MacKinnon's greatness, is it enough to say it surpasses that of Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Ray Bourque, and Patrick Roy?
"The fact that MacKinnon has so many more overtime goals than any other player in Avalanche history is yet another reminder of how great he is." -Tiedtke
The very fact that this conversation is happening while MacKinnon still has plenty of hockey ahead suggests that even if he hasn't reached that level yet, it's almost guaranteed he will by the time he retires.
