Tom Banks from Hockey Unplugged writes that Crosby's future has been a major talking point throughout the summer, as many around the league believe a fresh start away from Pittsburgh, following three straight years without a playoff appearance, could ultimately serve him best.
"However, as of right now he's remained loyal to the only NHL team he's ever known, so much so that many Insiders believe Crosby completely controls his fate, with the long-time captain the only one that could force him out of Pittsburgh." -Banks
Despite all the rumours, Crosby's loyalty to Pittsburgh hasn't wavered, and according to Elliotte Friedman on his 32 Thoughts podcast, the NHL still has him internally listed as a Penguin for their preseason media tour, signalling that nothing is expected to change heading into 2025-26.
"Of course, that means there is still time for Crosby to change his mind and request a trade out of Pittsburgh, the team he has remained loyal too for over 20 years, but at this stage, it's clear that he wants to remain a Penguin and help this team turn things around." -Banks
Ultimately, this is a storyline NHL insiders will continue to watch closely and speculate on in the months ahead.
While it's easy to imagine Crosby seeking a fresh opportunity to chase another Stanley Cup, there's no indication from him that such a move is coming, and until that changes, there's little reason to believe he'll ever wear anything other than a Penguins jersey.
