A recent report reveals a potential blockbuster trade that has the Boston Bruins acquiring star Colorado Avalanche defenseman Samuel Girard before the start of next NHL season.
Girard's name has been in the
rumour mill for over a year now.
Latest trade rumour has Samuel Girard heading to the Bruins.
Nestor Quixtan from Heavy.com writes that with the Avalanche looking to free up room for roster upgrades, Girard, who's been the subject of rumours for awhile now, remains the most likely veteran to be moved.
The 27-year-old blueliner carries a sizable cap hit and, with chatter picking up again this summer, Colorado may eventually decide the time is right to cash in, whether that's during the season or next offseason.
"So, that opens up an opportunity for the Bruins to land a top-four defenseman at a relatively low price. Considering the Avalanche wouldn't be taking any salary back, the Bruins could get Girard for pennies on his actual market value." -Quixtan
The potential trade would have the Bruins acquiring Girard and a 2026 first-round pick in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2027 second-round pick.
"In essence, the Bruins would be getting Girard for two draft picks. The Bruins have two fourth-rounders in the 2026 NHL Draft, their own and the Tampa Bay Lightning's. The Avalanche might prefer the Bruins' own pick.
The 2027 second-rounder could be a toss-up. If the Bruins have a great season in 2026-27, that second-rounder could be closer to the third round. If the Bruins have a bad season, that pick could be closer to a late first-round pick." -Quixtan
Still, adding a third second-round pick in the 2027 draft would be a smart move for Colorado, giving them another asset they could leverage in a future trade.
For the Bruins, Girard could help stabilize the second pairing, while providing insurance on the top pair as well should Lindholm or McAvoy un into ongoing health concerns.
"Like all trades, there's a downside to trading for Samuel Girard. While Girard has been a solid presence for the Colorado Avalanche over the last couple of seasons, injuries and declining production could play a role in his ability to contribute." -Quixtan
Even with some risk involved, the Bruins might be wise to roll the dice on Girard. With two years left on his contract at a $5 million AAV, exploring a deal for the veteran blueliner won't be a far-fetched idea.
