Cale Makar keeps proving why he's not only one of the best defensemen of his generation but also one of the all-time greats.
In the 2024-25 season, he topped the league's defensemen in multiple key statistics and earned his
second Norris Trophy.
Avalanche franchise player hit with shocking news.
Coby Maier from NHL.com writes that by netting 32 goals,
Makar became the first defenseman to score 30 or more goals since Mike Green's 31-goal season in 2008-09. He also set a new franchise record for defenseman points in a single season with 92. In addition to winning the Norris Trophy, Makar was a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award and placed sixth in Hart Trophy voting.
"Throughout the first six seasons of his career, Makar's 428 points in 395 games are the third most in NHL history through a blueliner's first 400 games, trailing only Bobby Orr (508) and Paul Coffey (475)." -Maier
Makar started the 2024-25 season strong, earning at least one point in each of the Avalanche's first 13 games. This streak is tied for the second-longest season-opening streak by a defenseman, only behind Bobby Orr's 15-game streak to start the 1973-74 season.
That 13-game streak was just one of Makar's 11 multi-game point streaks during the 2024-25 season, which also included six streaks where he recorded multiple points in consecutive games.
"Makar posted a defensemen-leading 27 multi-point games this season, including six multi-goal contests, highlighted by a six-point (2g/4a) outing against the San Jose Sharks on March 6th. He also posted a blueliner-best seven different three-point outings. Two of those were a pair of two-goal, one assist outings in 5-4 wins on the road against the New York Rangers on January 26th and against the Edmonton Oilers on February 7th." -Maier
Out of Makar's 32 goals this season, four were game-winners, including a thrilling overtime goal against the Dallas Stars on March 16th.
As the 2025-26 season approaches, Makar has two years left on his contract. he's just five games shy of 400 played, 88 points away from 400, and 72 points short of reaching 500 career points.
