The Colorado Avalanche are now facing a difficult decision regarding veteran defenseman and Stanley Cup champion Erik Johnson, as the latest development could significantly impact his future with the team.

As of late August, Johnson remains unsigned by any NHL team. So what does the future hold for the veteran defenseman?

Erik Johnson forces the Avalanche into a corner ahead of next season.

Brennan Vogt from Hockey Mountian High writes that Johnson has been spending a lot of time at the Avalanche's practice facility recently. The veteran defenseman seems to be preparing for another NHL season, but it's unclear which team he'll suit up for.
"Unfortunately, the first round against the Dallas Stars may have been the last time that Johnson will have played in an Avalanche sweater. Colorado has a good problem right now; they have too many defensemen. And they have just the right number of right-handed defensemen.

Currently, the Avalanche has four right-handed defensemen who could be on the NHL roster. Brent Burns was the latest addition and, after having not missed a game in the last five seasons, may have spelled the end for Johnson." -Vogt
The Avalanche currently have all 23 active roster spots filled, which likely rules out offering a professional tryout to anyone, including Johnson.
"The fan favorite has been a leader on and off the ice for the Avalanche. This is a huge reason that fans will hate to see the end of the Johnson era in Colorado. One thing is for sure though; he has a permanent stall in the Avalanche locker room until the start of training camp." -Vogt

Johnson might secure a modest one-year contract with another team, but there's simply no space for him in Colorado. Still, when he eventually retires, it's safe to say his number will join the rafters alongside other Avalanche's legends.
