A stunning new development has thrust the Colorado Avalanche into the spotlight, leaving fans and analysts questioning the team's recent salary contract decisions and raising doubts about how the organization is managing its roster for the upcoming season.

The Avalanche could appear like cheapskates in the wake of Kirill Kaprizov's record-breaking contract extension with the Minnesota Wild.

Colorado Avalanche look like cheapskates following Kirill Kaprizov extension.

Nestor Quixtan from Mile High Sticking writes that the impact of Kaprizov's deal is just starting to ripple across the NHL. By setting a new benchmark for player contracts, Kaprizov has shifted expectations, leaving impending free agents like Martin Necas closely watching how other teams respond to the Wild's historic move.
"But the Avalanche don't look like cheapskates because of Necas. The Avs look like penny pinchers because of Mikko Rantanen. The entire Rantanen saga is well-documented. The outcome was Rantanen signing a $96 million, eight-year extension with the Dallas Stars. That's $12 million AAV. The Toronto Maple Leafs had reportedly offered more.

Be that as it may, the Avalanche balked at paying Rantanen similar to or slightly more than Nathan MacKinnon. Now, I get where the Avalanche are coming from. They didn't want anyone else to eclipse their star." -Quixtan

But it does make you wonder, if Kaprizov, who is roughly on par with Rantanen, can command a $17 million AAV, wouldn't a $12 million deal start to look reasonable by comparison?
"The worst part is that contracts are only going to go up from here. If Kaprizov could get that much, imagine how much MacKinnon could land on the open market today. The fact is that the Avalanche, while potentially being unable to imagine what the Wild were going to do, dropped the ball due to their coupon-clipping ways." -Quixtan

Colorado missed the chance to secure one of the franchise's top players. Now, the team faces a choice: either meet Necas' contract demands or find a trade that makes the most sense for the organization.
