The Dallas Stars could become a last-minute addition to the NHL's coaching carousel.

Not only did the Stars unravel during the series, but head coach Peter DeBoer may have landed himself in hot water with the organization as well.

Avalanche divisional rival Dallas Stars' playoff exit sparks coaching controversy.

Nick Horwat from Breakaway On Si writes that the Stars appeared to be strong contenders for the Stanley Cup heading into the Western Conference Final against the Edmonton Oilers. But despite being the favourites, they managed just one win, as the Oilers took the series in five games to punch their ticket to the Stanley Cup Final.
DeBoer made the surprising and humiliating decision to pull star goalie Jake Oettinger in the decisive Game 5, a move that likely dealt a blow to the team's morale.
"Following the game, DeBoer defended his move by saying Oettinger had a track record of struggling against the Oilers. DeBoer later referenced a conversation he and the coaching staff had about possibly not starting Oettinger in Game 4 thanks to an illness." -Horwat

Between the uncomfortable goalie pull in Game 5 and DeBoer doubling down on his decision afterward, Stars players aren't pleased. According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, several players expressed their frustration during exit interviews.
Pagnotta also noted that DeBoer is entering the final year of his contract. With only one year remaining, the likelihood of a coaching change increases significantly. And if he isn't let go, a contract extension at this point seems highly unlikely.
"Head coaching searches have been taking place with numerous teams across the league. The Stars would be very late to the part if they decided to part ways with DeBoer right now, with most of the big names already being scooped up." -Horwat

The Stars have a strong roster, three consecutive trips to the Western Conference Final is no small feat, but it's clear they're still missing something. While the players understand their roles, there doesn't appear to be much praise directed toward their head coach.
