Martin Necas ended up with the Colorado Avalanche at the trade deadline, but a new report reveals that a massive deal nearly sent him to the Winnipeg Jets.
During the past season, the Carolina Hurricanes were part of multiple major trades, but none were more surprising than their first, a stunning deal that sent Necas and additional assets to Colorado in return for Mikko Rantanen.
Avalanche completely humiliated by divisional rival.
Tom Banks from House of Hockey writes that it's now been revealed that this wasn't the Hurricanes' first major offer involving Necas. According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, a blockbuster deal that would have sent him to the Jets was nearly completed.
"According to Friedman, the Jets were deep in conversations for a deal involving unrestricted free agent Nikolaj Ehlers, and while we don't know the full details of what that trade would be, Friedman notes that the Jets pulled out when they realized they may not get a long-term commitment from Necas." -Banks
Unsurprisingly, that's the exact situation the Colorado Avalanche find themselves in now, as reports suggest Necas is unhappy with his current role, and less than a year after trading for him, the team could be exploring options to move him again this summer.
"At this point, it's unclear what the future holds for Necas, as he appears non-committal to several teams around the league, and with unrestricted free agency upcoming next summer, he may just play it out and try find a long-term deal that way." -Banks
While we can only speculate how things might have unfolded if Necas had landed in Winnipep instead of Colorado. One thing is clear: both teams, ultimately fell short to the Dallas Stars in the playoffs. Had the Jets pulled off the deal, the ripple effect could have drastically reshaped the postseason landscape for all four franchises.
