An analyst has stirred up debate by suggesting that Vancouver Canucks' Quinn Hughes could have a bigger impact on the ice than Colorado Avalanche $54M star defenseman Cale Makar, challenging conventional rankings and sparking discussion among fans and experts alike.
New information emerges revealing who outshines the other between Hughes and Makar.
Analyst breaks down why Quinn Hughes ranks below Avalanche's Cale Makar.
KD Jain from The Sporting News writes that on the «Sekeres and Price» podcast, NHL analyst Matthew Sekeres explained why Quinn Hughes falls behind Cale Makar in the rankings.
"Quinn Hughes comes in as number 2 after Cale Makar. I don't think that's any surprise after Hughes missed some time last season. Played through some injuries, not to mention Makar has another Norris Trophy win." -Sekeres
Although Hughes appeared in 68 games, he recorded 76 points, including 16 goals and 60 assists. Meanwhile, Makar posted a career-high 92 points, including 30 goals, becoming just the ninth defenseman in NHL history to reach the 30-goal milestone.
The bigger distinction, however, lies in their plus-minus ratings: Makar finished at +28, far surpassing Hughes' +2.
"Makar clearly had the more dominant season. He led all NHL defensemen in goals, assists, points, and plus-minus. Meanwhile, Hughes, who won his sixth consecutive Babe Pratt Trophy (awarded to Canucks' best defenseman), was excellent, but his limited appearance didn't help his case for the best defenseman honor." -Jain
Only time will tell which player will have the stronger performance in the upcoming season.
