What the Toronto Maple Leafs' pursuit of Colorado Avalanche star Martin Necas reveals about the team's long-term vision.

According to a recent report
, the Maple Leafs are targeting the young superstar, a player who could perfectly align with the team's evolving strategy.

Martin Necas could be part of Toronto's future plans.

Charlie McAfee from Hockey Patrol writes that sources close to the Avalanche say both the Maple Leafs and New York Rangers have shown interest in Necas and are expected to continue pursuing him this year.
Much of the speculation revolves around Cale Makar's potential contract extension and the high cost associated with it, which could make acquiring Necas a financial challenge.
"They need to lock up Cale Makar next offseason, and even with the cap going up, where are they finding the money to give Necas?

So now the real question to me is, will the Avalanche keep him as their own playoff rental at the trade deadline, or will he go to another team as a rental and sign an extension with them?

I'll tell you one thing: when it comes to trading for him at least as a rental, I'd be watching the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Rangers; if, as I expect, the Rangers will be back in the playoff hunt." -Murphy

Necas checks all the boxes for the Treviling group. He brings physicality, shot-blocking ability, and defensive reliability, while also providing the dynamic top-six offensive punch the team will need following Mitch Marner's departure.
"For his career, he has 329 points in 443 games (126 goals, 203 assists) and has the chops to be someone who averages 45-50 assists per season.
That alone would give Toronto exactly the playmaker they need up top, and at only 26, he's still getting into his prime years and starting to break out. Plus, he would give the Maple Leafs power play some added punch as well with his 102 career PP points." -McAfee

Toronto doesn't necessarily need a player like Necas to succeed, as the team's new vision is built around loyalty, passion, and heart.
Still, adding some star power certainly helps, and Necas could be the perfect fit.
