Expectations were high for Ross Colton this season after his success on the "Roaring 20s" line alongside Logan O'Connor and Miles Wood last season.

The Colorado Avalanche hoped to recapture that chemistry, but injuries disrupted the trio. As a result, head coach Jared Bednar was forced to shake things up, pushing Colton into a more prominent role on a higher line.
Brennan Vogt from Hockey Mountain High writes that Colton began the season centering the second line and made an immediate impact, tallying nine points in his first ten games. However, his strong start was derailed on October 28th against the Chicago Blackhawks when he blocked what looked like a routine shot with his foot. The play resulted in a broken foot, sidelining Colton for the entire month of November.
"Colton came back and was never the same after he suffered the injury. Before the injury, he was a regular on the first power play unit. After the injury, he mostly saw time in the second unit." -Vogt

Colton's standout moment of the season came on January 9th against the Minnesota Wild. Late in the first period, as the Wild regrouped behind their own net for a line change, Colton pounced, intercepting the puck and quickly slipping it past goaltender Filip Gustavsson. His reaction afterward, turning with a look of complete disbelief, captured the surprise and thrill of the play.
Vogt also writes that Colton was limited to just one playoff appearance due to a groin injury. He had been slated to return in the second round if the Avalanche had advanced past the Dallas Stars. He finished the regular season with 16 goals and 13 assists over 61 games.
"Colton could be a cheap option for the second center if the Avalanche need to use him there. He was most productive at that position early in the season and he benefits from increased ice time." -Vogt

Colton still has two years left on his contract before becoming an unrestricted free agent. His cap hit of $4 million, and his modified no-trade clause will take effect starting July 1.
