As the Avalanche continue to search for offensive depth, a recent report indicates that the Colorado are on the verge of acquiring star forward Mattias Janmark in a potential blockbuster deal with the Edmonton Oilers.

The Avalanche enter the summer with a massive hole at their third-line center position that desperately needs to be addressed before the start of next season.

Avalanche eyeing star forward in blockbuster deal.

Rupert McDonald from The Hockey Writers reports that the Edmonton Oilers might have to create some cap space, as they currently have under $300,000 in available cap room.
This limited flexibility makes it difficult for them to make additional roster moves through free agency. While they may not be actively looking to make changes, having extra cap space would certainly provide more financial flexibility.
"It seems that the Oilers are wanting to create some space, as insider Bob Stauffer has hinted several times that they would like to free up roughly $1 million, if not slightly more. While he hasn't said any specific names, the one player who seemingly fits that bill is Mattias Janmark, who has two seasons remaining on a contract that carries a cap hit of $1.45 million." -McDonald

Janmark is a reliable bottom-six forward, though considered expendable. Several teams across the NHL would likely be interested in picking him up, but his no-trade list, which includes 10 teams, limits the number of potential destinations.
"One area of the Avalanche that is particularly weak is their bottom-six forward group. They are going to need to add to that ahead of the 2025-26 season, and have just over $4 million in cap space to do so. That would give them more than enough space to acquire Janmark and likely wouldn't cost much more than a mid-round draft pick to make it happen." -McDonald

The Avalanche still boast elite players like Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, keeping them firmly in the conversation as Stanley Cup contenders.
However, despite their star power, the roster has some significant gaps, an issue that often arises with teams loaded with top-tier talent.
