As the Avalanche continue to search for center depth in their lineup ahead of next season, a recent report reveals that Colorado is targeting star forward Lawson Crouse from their Central Division rival, the Utah Mammoth, in what would be a stunning blockbuster trade.
Avalanche eyeing star forward from divisional rival.
Aarif Deen from Colorado Hockey Now writes that at the moment, the Avalanche boast a formidable top-six lineup, genuinely one of the best in the NHL. Their top defensive pairing is solid, supported by capable middle-pair defenseman who are still finding their ideal roles. Add in a high-caliber goaltending duo, and this team is well-positioned to hit the ice running.
"The third line looks shoddy right now, and Logan O'Connor's injury adds more holes in the bottom six in general. But these are easier spots to fill mid-season than what they had to deal with this past year. Or even in 2023-24." -Deen
Who is the most realistic trade target to address the open slot on the third line?
J.T. Compher is seen as the most probable choice since the Red Wings are looking to move on from his contract, though they'd need to retain some salary to make a deal happen. There are also many wingers across the NHL, including free agents, who could fill the role.
"One guy I'd like to see Avs keep an eye on is Lawson Crouse. He's got two years remaining on his deal at $4.3 million, but he could be someone worth taking a chance on to bounce back from a bad year." -Deen
Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland said two weeks ago that he's still in contact with his upcoming UFA's but prefers to give the market some space now. We'll have to wait and see what develops over the course of the offseason.
