Matt Levine from Athlon Sports writes that this could push the front office to consider bold changes, possibly involving key players. One name that's been circulating in trade rumours this summer is star forward Jason Robertson.
"Dallas likely doesn't want to lose Robertson, but the team does have to make a decision on giving him a new contract. Robertson has one more year on his current deal before he hits restricted free agency. The Star may not want to pay Robertson what he believes he is worth, leading to potential trade rumors. And it seems that one team may be the leader to land him if he is traded." -Levine
NHL insider Jeff Marek has reported that the Anaheim Ducks have surfaced as a possible destination for Robertson if he ends up leaving Dallas. While the Stars and Robertson have been in talks over a new contract, there are signs that negotiations could be heading in the wrong direction.
"I don't think Dallas Stars are going to let the Jason Robertson question linger deep into the summer; they're going to find out pretty quick what number he's looking at; I think Dallas will have an idea in pretty early July; I see Ducks as a destination." - Marek
For the Ducks, acquiring Robertson would be a game-changer move for their young, developing roster. Anaheim has been steadily rebuilding, and Robertson could be the key piece that helps accelerate their return to contention.
"Robertson scored 35 goals and 45 assists for the Stars this past season. His ability to do everything on the ice is special, and Anaheim would surely try to land him if made available." -Levine
