According to a recent report, Colorado Avalanche star forward Martin Necas gets significant contract news as trade speculation continues to swirl ahead of the final year of his current deal.

Necas has reportedly been unhappy in his early days with the Avalanche.

Avalanche star receives big contract news.

Sam Bernardi from The Sporting News writes that Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland has a chance to redeem himself through Necas.
His decision to trade superstar Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes, in exchange for Necas, Jack Drury, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-rounder, sparked major backlash from the fanbase.
"Rantanen was an expiring contract, and while he wanted to stay, MacFarland must have felt that Nečas's extra year of team control and inevitable fit alongside Nathan MacKinnon would ease any doubts." -Bernardi

Now, MacFarland faces pressure to lock Necas into a long-term deal to avoid turning the Rantanen trade into a complete disaster. According to NHL analyst Nick Kypreos, "the feeling is Martin Necas could get $10 million or more."
Necas delivered a strong finish to the 2025 season with the Avalanche, tallying 11 goals and 28 points in his final 30 games. That late surge lifted his season totals to 27 goals and 83 points across 79 appearances.
"Nečas will not turn 27 until next January, and has the speed and skill to handle MacKinnon's heavy demands. However, should he earn $10 million annually, it begs the original Rantanen question: why not just pay him the $12 million the Dallas Stars handed him?" -Bernardi

MacFarland and the front office might feel that, despite Rantanen's talent, as shown by his leading role knocking Colorado out of the playoffs, he benefited significantly from playing alongside MacKinnon.
Why not opt for the more affordable, younger option in Necas, who has the potential to be a franchise cornerstone alongside MacKinnon and Cale Makar?
No matter the contract Necas signs, he will inevitably face comparisons to Rantanen throughout his entire career.
