A new report has unveiled a surprising update involving former Colorado Avalanche goalie Justus Annunen, catching fans off guard.
Annunen was one of six netminders the Colorado Avalanche relied on last season.
Shocking update emerges on former Avalanche goalie Justus Annunen.
Evan Liu from Hockey Mountain High writes that once seen as a promising future starter, the Finnish prospect ultimately failed to live up to expectations.
He appeared to have graduated from the Colorado Eagles and secured a full-time spot with the Avalanche, playing solely in the NHL this season after years of bouncing between the AHL and NHL.
"In 11 games with the Avs, he had a 3.23 goals-against average but a subpar save percentage of .872. However, he did have a positive 6-4 win/loss record while starting in nine games." -Liu
Compared to his goaltending partner
Alexander Georgiev, Annunen actually had the stronger start. However, both netminders struggled with consistence, leading head coach Jared Bednar to alternative between them in hopes of riding the hot hand.
Annunen appeared to have a longer leash because of his developement within the organization since being drafted in the third round of the 2018 NHL Draft. However, he wasn't given many chances to truly prove himself.
"Eventually, it just became too much to handle for the organization. On November 30, he was dealt alongside a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft to the Nashville Predators. In return, Colorado received
Scott Wedgewood." -Liu
Annunen joined Finnish teammate Jusse Saros in the crease for the Predators. Despite his struggles, he played a career-high 23 games this season, starting in 20 of them.
"He put up nine wins, a goals-against average of 3.17, and another subpar save percentage of .888. But he did find himself with a losing record at 9-11, unlike with the Avs." -Liu
Despite the Predators' disappointing season after adding several star players, Annunen showed flashes of potential and, at just 25 years old, could still play a key role in their future.
Standing 6-foot-4, Annunen still has one year remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $837,500. As the backup to
Juuse Saros, he'll aim to keep developing and compete for the starting role in Nashville.
