In a shocking turn of events, Colorado Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon has been called out in a bombshell report that raises questions heading into the upcoming NHL fantasy season.

The big question heading into the 2025-26 season is whether MacKinnon has finally surpassed Connor McDavid as the top fantasy hockey player.

Nathan MacKinnon called out in latest development.

Jason Chen from The Hockey News writes that the short answer is no. McDavid's offensive ceiling still tops the league. The long answer is maybe, depending on health, puck luck, and your league settings.
In formats that count face-off wins and shots, taking MacKinnon over McDavid may shock some, but it's a defensible move. MacKinnon brings elite volume in those categories, a stronger track record of durability, and often logs heavier minutes.
"If there is some trepidation heading into the 2025-26 season for the Avs, it's because their 2024-25 season started horribly. They lost four straight with 25 goals allowed to start the season, and hovered around .500 until the end of November until a flurry of moves turned their season around, but their playoff run ended with question marks about their roster construction." -Chen

The Avalanche aren't likely to change their approach after moving on from Mikko Rantanen, and both Cale Makar and MacKinnon should remain locked in as top-five fantasy options thanks to their elite talent and heavy usage.
"Without Rantanen, I also expect MacKinnon to raise his shot volume; he averaged nearly six shots per game in the playoffs and it would not be surprising to see him approach 400 shots this coming season. It would push him back into the 40-goal range, but not having Rantanen does make me question if he can put up 80 assists for the third straight season. For what it's worth, THN Yearbook & Fantasy Guide projected MacKinnon to finish with 123 points, trailing only McDavid." -Chen

MacKinnon and Makar once again carry the Avalanche, both finishing as top-five fantasy players at their positions. Colorado's strong top-six drives another successful season, while Mackenzie Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood deliver above-average goaltending, with Blackwood even entering the conversation for most wins.
