Hockey Canada stuns Avalanche fans with latest roster announcement

Amid the flurry of announcements, one notable omission was Avalanche goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood.

Adam Laskaris from DH Sports writes that on Friday, Hockey Canada unveiled its list for the upcoming off-ice orientation camp, scheduled for August 26-28 in Calgary. The roster includes 30 women, 27 of whom play in the PWHL, 42 NHL players on the men's side, and 20 athletes vying for spots on Canada's Paralympic sledge hockey team.

Canada enters the camp as the reigning gold medalist on the women's side, having captured five of the seven Olympic titles since women's hockey debuted in 1998.

Meanwhile, the men's team will be looking to return to the podium after being shutout in 2022, a year that saw NHL players barred from participating, for the first time since 2006.

Earlier this summer, Team Canada named its first six players for the 2026 Olympic roster, highlighting an elite core that includes Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, Connor McDavid, Brayden Point, and Sam Reinhart.

Over the coming months, the initial invite lists will be narrowed down to 23 players for the women's team and 25 for the men's, with the first puck drop at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, scheduled for February 5.
