According to a new report, Colorado Avalanche prospect Matt Stienburg could be the team's next enforcer, bringing toughness, grit, and a physical edge to the roster as the organization looks to bolster its hard-hitting presence.

Stienburg was selected by the Avalanche in the third-round (63rd overall) in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

Avalanche just found their next enforcer in prospect Matt Stienburg.

Brennan Vogt from Mile High Hockey writes that despite battling injuries for much of last season, it was Stienburg's performance on the ice that truly stood out.
The 2019 third-rounder showcased his abilities and how he could positively impact the team.
"Stienburg started the season out impressively with the Colorado Eagles. In the opening game of the season, Stienburg scored a shorthanded goal assisted by Jayson Megna. The following night, had an assist of his own.

Stienburg's early success led to a call-up just five days into the season for the Avalanche. He would make his NHL debut against the Boston Bruins on October 16 and had to make an impact. Halfway through the second period, Stienburg fought former Avalanche defenseman Nikita Zadorov." -Vogt

Halifax native Stienburg, known for his grit, received a two-game suspension after boarding Erik Cernak and was sent to the Colorado Eagles, where a shoulder injury ended his season.
"Fans can probably look forward to the Canadian making a run for the fourth line sometime this season as the Avalanche burned his suspension by rostering him in the playoffs. Coach Jared Bednar has leaned a little more heavily on the grit of the younger players, and Stienburg fits the bill. He is not that fast, but he lets you know if you get too close to the wall anytime he is on the ice." -Vogt

Lately, he hasn't shied away from dropping the gloves. While fighting still needs refinement, he's learned over the past year how to assert himself as the big kid on the ice.
