A newly surfaced report has delivered a stunning update on the future of Colorado Avalanche defenseman Sam Malinski, raising major questions about what's next for one of the team's most promising young players.
New report reveals shocking career update on Sam Malinski.
Savvy Rafkin from Hockey Mountain High writes that Malinski might not have the physical presence of
Keaton Middleton or the blazing speed of
Cale Makar, but he stands out as a dependable and consistent force who adds valuable depth to the Avalanche lineup.
His 2024-25 season stars showed clear progress compared to his rookie year in 2023-24, reflecting noticeable growth in defensive awareness and adaptability to the fast pace and shifting roster demands.
Malinski recorded nine assists and scored four goals during the season, although several of his goals were disallowed.
"He is not an 'offensive defenseman' like those on the top line. When playing with blue-line teammates as seasoned and talented as Makar and
Devon Toews, he doesn't need to be. Instead, he favors locking down the defensive zone." -Rafkin
Malinski took 194 hits while delivering 52 of his own and blocked 99 shots to support his goaltenders. Considering this was his first full NHL season, playing 76 games, a significant increase from his previous 23, these stats highlight his ability to handle the physical and mental challenges of a complete campaign.
Before securing a full-time spot with the Avalanche, Malinski made valuable contributions at the AHL level with the Colorado Eagles. While he scored just five goals, he added 22 assists, demonstrating his skill at moving the puck effectively and his knack for positioning himself well on the ice.
"Malinski is not flashy. He's not on the highlight reels. But that doesn't make him any less valuable. In 2024, his hard work at training camp resulted in a one-way, $1.4 million contract offer, proving he was a good fit for the Avalanche roster." -Rafkin
As Malinski approaches his contract extension ahead of becoming a UFA in the 2025-26 season, he aims to firmly establish himself in Denver. If he keeps progressing and gains more experience, he's poised to become a quietly powerful presence for the Avalanche in their burgundy and blue.
