A new team is reportedly closing in on a blockbuster trade for former Colorado Avalanche star goalie Alexander Georgiev, marking a stunning twist in the offseason goalie market.

Georgiev recently wrapped up the final season of his three-year, $10.2 million deal, which carried an average annual value of $3.4 million.

New team closing in on Alexander Georgiev.

Paul Griser from Pro Hockey Rumors writes that although he's shown he can handle a starting role and has solid career stats, free agent Georgiev is coming off the toughest season of his career, casting doubt on his NHL future.
Splitting time between the Avalanche and San Jose Sharks, he struggled to a 7-19-4 record, with a .875 save percentage and a 3.71 GAA.
"At this point in the process, most teams have a clear idea of who their starter and backup will be for next season. However, teams not fully comfortable with their backup situation may take a chance on Georgiev bouncing back from his difficult 2024-25 campaign." -Griser

A reunion with one of Georgiev's former teams could make sense. The New York Rangers, where he started his NHL journey, currently have 39-year-old Jonathan Quick backing up Igor Shesterkin.
While top prospect Callum Tung is developing in the AHL, the 21-year-old likely needs at least another season before making the jump. Bringing back Georgiev could give the Rangers a reliable veteran presence, added organizational depth, and a potential mentor for Tung.
"Teams not expecting to contend next season could also take a run at Georgiev, hoping he can revitalize his career, potentially making him a valuable trade asset come the deadline in March. However, those same teams might be better off giving opportunities to prospects looking to establish themselves in the league." -Griser

At this point in the offseason, Georgiev would likely consider any one-way contract offer, even at the league minimum. Nothing appears to be off the table, whether it's a two-way deal, a professional tryout (PTO), or even a return to Russia, where he started his professional career and still holds dual citizenship.
