Just two days into NHL free agency, the St. Louis Blues have wasted no time.
With two free-agent signings, a very questionable trade with Montreal, and a veteran defenseman placed on waivers, Blues GM Doug Armstrong and Alexander Steen have revamped the roster as they aim to build on their 2024-25 success.

John Poston from Bleedin' Blue writes that this move is hard to accept for Blues fans. Trading Zack Bolduc, one of the standout performers of the 2024-25 season, raises some eyebrows. At just 21, Bolduc scored 19 goals and totaled 36 points, showing promise as a potential cornerstone for the Blues' future.
Still, this outcome wasn't unexpected. Armstrong has been discussing the Blues' abundance of wingers for weeks, and with the recent drafting of Justin Carbonneau, it was almost certain that one of the team's younger wingers would be traded.

Logan Mailloux, the other hand, is a young right-handed defenseman with plenty of potential, an asset the Blues currently lack in their system. He's nearing NHL readiness and could become a key part of St. Louis' next defensive corps.
While Bolduc is likely the stronger player in this trade, with a much higher ceiling, sometimes you have to give to get, and trading from a surplus of wingers to shore up a defensive need was a smart move.
