Jonathan Toews eyes NHL comeback, and the Colorado Avalanche might be on his radar

LeBrun reports that Toews contacted his agent, Pat Brisson, yesterday to confirm he's ready for an NHL return. Brisson is now expected to begin fielding interest from teams ahead of the July 1's free agent frenzy.

The 37-year-old is working toward an NHL comeback after stepping away from hockey following the expiration of his contract with the Chicago Blackhawks at the end of the 2022-23 season.

The 6-foot-2 center tallied 15 goals and 31 points in 53 games for the Blackhawks during the 2022-23 season while battling the lingering effects of long COVID and chronic immune response syndrome.

In November, Toews shared that he had traveled to India for an Ayurvedic detox treatment known as Panchakarma, and in a December interview with GQ, he confirmed that he was preparing for an NHL comeback.

Selected third overall by the Blackhawks in the 2006 NHL Draft, Toews has registered 372 goals and 883 points across 1,067 career games.

He was instrumental in ending the Blackhawks' 47-year Stanley Cup drought in 2010, and helped the lead the team to two more championships in 2013 and 2015. Toews earned the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2010 after posting seven goals and 29 points in just 22 playoff games.

The Winnipeg native represented Canada on the Olympic stage twice, capturing gold medals in both 2010 and 2014 Winter games.

With Colorado's ongoing search for a proper second-line center, there's no question why Toews can't be a leading candidate to fill that position.

Leading up to free agency, don't be surprised if Toews' name is continuously linked to the Avalanche throughout the offseason.
