Former Avalanche goalie's unexpected opportunity raises big questions

Former Colorado Avalanche goaltender Kevin Mandolese has been handed a massive opportunity with the Montreal Canadiens, as the organization looks to solidify its depth in net heading into the upcoming NHL season.
Hockey Insider Frank Seravalli reports that the Canadiens have signed Mandolese to a professional tryout (PTO).

Hunter Crowther from the Daily Faceoff writes that Mandolese, 25, played last season with the AHL's Colorado Eagles, posting an 11-6-0 with a .903 SV% AND 2.87 GAA in 19 games.
"In five AHL seasons, Mandolese has recorded a 39-34-5 record with an .898 SV% and 3.20 GAA in 85 regular-season games with the Eagles and Belleville Senators, the Ottawa Senators' AHL affiliate.
He's also appeared in 15 ECHL regular-season games across three seasons with the Atlanta Gladiators and Allen Americans, going 6-7-1 with a .921 SV% and 2.77 GAA." -Crowther

A 2018 sixth-round pick by the Ottawa Senators, Mandolese spent four QMJHL seasons with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, going 86-41-8 with a .900 SV% and 2.96 GAA in 151 games.
"His best season came in 2019-20, going 26-8-1 with a league-leading save percentage of .925 and a 2.33 GAA, third in the league, in 37 games. He was named a QMJHL First Team All-Star and was a finalist for CHL Goaltender of the Year." -Crowther
The Canadiens went 40-31-11 (91 points) last season, claiming the East's second Wild Card before falling to the Washington Capitals in five games.
