On Thursday, the IIHF revealed that Swiss forward and former Colorado Avalanche forward Sven Andriguetto has been honoured as the 2024-25 Male Player of the Year.
Andrighetto secured 34.6% of the votes, surpassing U.S. goalie Jeremy Swayman, who received 18.6%, and Czech forward David Padtrnak, who earned 18%.
Hunter Crowther from Daily Faceoff writes that Andriguetto guided Switzerland to the gold-medal game at the 2025 World Championship, ultimately earning a silver medal. He also helped lead the ZSC Zurich Lions to titles in both Switzerland's National League and Europe's Champions Hockey League.
"In 45 Swiss league games last season, Andrighetto scored 20 goals and had 19 assists for 39 points in 45 games with Zurich SC. In six seasons in the National League, he has 90 goals and 96 assists for 186 points in 219 career regular-season games." -Crowther
Selected in the third round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, Andriguetto tallied 31 goals and 52 assists for a total of 83 points across 216 regular-season games with both the Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche. He also played in 11 Stanley Cup Playoffs games, scoring one goal.
"Before turning professional, Andrighetto played two seasons in the QMJHL with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, scoring 67 goals and 105 assists for 172 points, including a 2012-13 season where he scored 31 goals and 67 assists for 98 points. In 18 QMJHL playoff games, he scored eight goals and 24 assists for 32 points." -Crowther
The IIHF press release states that "The IIHF Male Player of the Year Award is presented annually to a player who exemplifies outstanding skill, determination, team success, and sportsmanship both on and off the ice throughout the most recent season."
