Fans were left stunned by the arbitrator's decision regarding former Avalanche first-round star forward Ryan Johansen, sparking widespread reaction across the hockey world.
Philadelphia acquired
Johansen from the Colorado Avalanche at the trade deadline in exchange for
Sean Walker. Johansen had played 63 games for Colorado that season, including one just a few days before the trade.
Arbitrator's verdict on Ryan Johansen has been announced.
Dave Litman from NHL Trade Rumors writes that insider Darren Dreger reveals that an arbitrator has ruled in the dispute between the Philadelphia Flyers and Ryan Johansen over the team's contract termination last year, with the decision siding with the Flyers.
"The Flyers had cited a 'material breach' as grounds for their termination of Johansen's contract. This grievance was filed on the player's behalf by the NHLPA." -Litman
After the trade, the Flyers showed no interest in placing Johansen in their lineup and attempting to assign him to the minors.
However, Johansen claimed he was injured, leading the Flyers to believe he was using the injury as a reason to avoid reporting to the AHL. As a result, he didn't play for either the Flyers of their affiliate for the remainder of the season.
"At the end of the '23-'24 campaign, Philly terminated his contract, which would have paid him $8 million, split between the Nashville Predators (who had retained on a previous trade to Colorado) and the Flyers, for the 2024-25 season. Both teams remain off the hook for that cap hit as a result of the reported arbitrator's decision." -Litman
Johansen was an All-Star during the 2014-15 season with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Over his 13-year NHL career, he has accumulated 202 goals and 578 points in 905 games.
