In a move that caught many by surprise, the Colorado Avalanche have officially announced their blockbuster decision, signing star forward Joel Kiviranta to a one-year contract extension, solidifying his place in the lineup ahead of the upcoming NHL season.
The deal signals the team's continued belief in Kiviranta's impact and potential as a key contributor moving forward.
Avalanche lock up forward Joel Kiviranta for next season.
Michael DeRosa from NHL Trade Rumors reports that Kiviranta spent the past two seasons with the Avalanche, steadily carving out a role in the team's bottom six. During the 2023-24 campaign, the 5-foot-11 forward tallied three goals and six assists for nine points across 56 games, along with 78 hits.
He took a major step forward the following year, posting career highs with 16 goals, seven assists, and 23 points in 79 games, all while registering an impressive plus-15 rating.
"Given how well Kiviranta fit into the Avalanche's lineup, especially this past season, it is not too surprising to see him heading back to Colorado. He should continue to be a solid part of their forward depth and will likely have a spot in their bottom six and penalty kill next season." -DeRosa
Across 298 career NHL games over six seasons with the Dallas Stars and Avalanche, Kiviranta has amassed 35 goals, 25 assists, 60 points, 92 penalty minutes, 463 hits, and a plus-1 rating. With a new one-year deal in hand, it will be intriguing to see how the hard-working forward builds on those numbers in the upcoming season with the Avalanche.
