As Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger eyes USA Hockey history, the Colorado Avalanche will be looking to avoid landing on wrong side of NHL history at the start of next season.
As the season begins in early October, Stars netminder Jake Oettinger will be only one win away from etching his name into USA Hockey history.
Jake Oettinger eyes USA Hockey history.
Taylor Newby from The Hockey News writes that with 149 wins in 251 career games, Oettinger is just one victory away from setting the record for the fewest games played to reach 150 wins in American-born goaltending history.
"Currently, the mark is set at 258 games by Frank Brimsek, who did it nine games quicker than the current second place mark from Ryan Miller. That means Oettinger technically has six games to set the new record, although if it took six games for Oettinger to get the Stars first win, the record will be the least of his worries." -Newby
The Avalanche will aim to stay on the right side of hockey history when they take on the Stars in the first week of their upcoming NHL season on October 11.
Oettinger has consistently established as one of the NHL's top goaltenders, and barring injury, he is all but guaranteed a spot on Team USA for the upcoming Olympics.
"Dallas plays in Winnipeg to open the season, which will be a battle between those two U.S. goaltenders, as well as a second round playoff rematch. Oettinger will need to be sharp early with three divisional matchups in a row, all against playoff teams, to start the year." -Newby
With Oettinger chasing history and the Avalanche set to face Dallas early in their schedule, the start of the NHL season promises high stakes and plenty of storylines to watch.
