The Calgary Flames have officially signed goaltender Ivan Prosvetov to a one-year, one-way contract, the team announced. The deal carries an average annual value of $950,000.

The Flames are confident that free-agent pickup Prosvetov is prepared to take on a full-time role as an NHL goaltender.

Can goaltender Prosvetov steal the spotlight in Calgary?

Wes Gilbertson from Yahoo Sports writes that Prosvetov, 26, was originally selected by the Arizona Coyotes in the fourth round (144th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft. After spending a few years developing in the minors, he made his NHL debut during the 2000-21 season and went on to play 13 games with the Coyotes over three seasons.
In October of 2023, following his placement on waivers by Arizona, he was claimed by the Colorado Avalanche. That season, he appeared in a career-high 11 games for Colorado, posting a 4-3-1 record. Prosvetov also suited up for 21 games with the AHL's Colorado Eagles, where he recorded a .921 save percentage and an 11-7-2 record.
The Russian will earn to backup role in Calgary by winning a training camp competition, a position that became available after Dan Vladar signed with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Here's what Flames director of goaltending Jordan Sigalet had to say about Prosvetov's game...
«He kind of reminds me a little bit of Vladar when we traded for him (in 2021). He's a guy who hasn't popped yet, but I think he's close to popping at the NHL level. We wanted another young and hungry guy who is still trying to prove himself, so that's why we went down that road." -Sigalet

Last season, Prosvetov returned to Russia after being promised the chance to serve as the primary starter for CSKA Moscow in the KHL, though he continued to stay on the radar of the Flames goaltending coach.
Now part of Calgary's system, the towering 6-foot-5, 200-pound netminder brings a blend of size and athleticism, a potent combination in the crease. He's also been refining his technique with one of Russia's top goaltending coaches to bring more structure and consistency to his game.
