Avalanche coach makes a career move.

Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that Petersen has been named head coach of the Texas Stars, Dallas' American Hockey League affiliate. Petersen takes over from Neil Graham, who was recently appointed as an assistant coach on Glen Gulutzan's staff with the Dallas Stars.
«We are pleased to name Toby as the head coach of the Texas Stars. Toby brings over 22 years of professional hockey experience to the Stars bench. He has been successful as a player in both the NHL and AHL and has held coaching positions in both leagues. Toby understands what it takes to build and develop a championship caliber team, as he has been part of winning a Calder Cup as a player and coach. Additionally, his familiarity with our organization is invaluable and will no doubt help us continue the culture that has been established in Cedar Park.» -Nill

Petersen spent the past two seasons (2023-25) with the Colorado Avalanche as a skills coach. While in Denver, he collaborated closely with the coaching staff and hockey operators team to boost the development of both Avalanche and Colorado Eagles players through on-ice practices and off-ice training sessions.
"I am honored to be named the next head coach of the Texas Stars. It's extremely exciting for me and my family to return to Texas, reconnect with the city of Cedar Park, and rejoin the Stars organization. My priority as head coach will be a commitment to the process of proper development, ensuring we have a strong foundation in place that consistently puts our team in a position to win. I look forward to building upon the established, high-performing culture of the Texas Stars.» -Petersen

Petersen spent sevens years within the Stars organization from 2007 to 2014, playing for both the Dallas Stars (2007-13) and Texas Stars (2012-14). He appeared in 243 regular-season games with Dallas, recording 40 points (17 goals, 23 assists), and took part in 16 playoff contests. While with Texas, Petersen served as an alternate captain and was a member of the 2014 Calder Cup championship team. He played 108 regular-season games with the Texas Stars, posting 36 points (13 goals, 23 assists), and added one assist in 16 playoff appearances.
