The NHL schedule release is just around the corner, and on Monday, fans received some early news revealing that the Colorado Avalanche will open their upcoming 2025-26 season opener on the road against the Los Angeles Kings.

For the third straight year, the Avalanche will begin their season with a road trip out west.

Avalanche announce big news for next season.

Trent Finnegan from Denver Sports writes that the Avalanche began their season in Los Angeles in 2023, opened in Vegas in 2024, and are set to return to L.A. to kick off the 2025 campaign. Puck drop is set for 8:30 p.m. MDT on October 7, but with the game serving as the third installment as a national TV triple-header, fans in the Mile High City can expect a likely start time closer to 9:00 p.m.
The Avalanche took the season series over the Kings 2-1 last year, with each game won by the home team. All-time, Colorado holds a narrow advantage in the rivalry with an 80-79-8-4 record. However, they've been in firm control in recent years, going 16-6-1 against the Kings since the start of the decade.
"This will be the first true look at an Avalanche squad that has been totally revamped since opening night last year. While the team had two months to try and gel after general manager Chris MacFarland made a flurry of moves at the trade deadline last season, they never had the chance to build the chemistry of a Stanley Cup-winning team, and the return of Gabriel Landeskog in the playoffs only threw another wrench into the equation." -Finnegan

While a few gaps remain on the roster, particularly among the bottom-six wingers, the Avalanche still have some cap space to address those needs before training camp begins. That sais, their championship window is clearly narrowing.
Nathan MacKinnon is entering his 13th season with the Avalanche, and there's still uncertainty surrounding how Gabriel Landeskog's body will hold up over the grind of a full season. Whatever moves GM Chris MacFarland has left to make will need to count.
"The Kings added a lot of talent to their roster this offseason with Corey Perry, Cody Ceci and others, and are poised to have a squad that can make it out of the first round of the playoffs for the first time since the franchise won the Stanley Cup in 2014. This will be no easy task for Colorado to start the season, especially on the road." -Finnegan

The remainder of Colorado's schedule is set to be unveiled on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. MDT. While it may feel like the hockey season just wrapped up, the next chapter is already fast approaching.
