Star forward Martin Necas' inconsistency from last season since joining Colorado has certainly created growing concerns over his future with the Avalanche.
The Czech forward will be entering the 2025-2026 season without a new contract extension.
Colorado Forward Martin Necas' inconsistency causes major uncertainty for his future
Evan Liu of Hockey Mountain High suggests the Avalanche may be holding out on offering an extension to Necas due to less than impressive numbers since joining the team last season.
During the Stanley Cup playoffs against the Dallas Stars, Martin Necas had a very uninspiring performance, a growing concern dating back to his time in Carolina. His first round only saw him manage one goal and four assists in seven games.
This was not just limited to his short postseason, in the 30 regular season games he played he tallied 11 goals and 17 assists. Taking into consideration his large jump in average time on ice of 20 minutes these numbers are nothing to be excited about, especially when you compare them to the player he was traded for superstar forward
Mikko Rantanen.
"With the Czechia forward eying over $10 million in his next deal, it's a tough pill to swallow for the Avs. Considering they didn't pay upwards of $12 million for their former Finnish star, can they find an in-between to keep the Marty Party rolling?
While it would make sense to lock down Necas now, Colorado doesn't really know what they're getting out of Necas right now. Likely in their minds, a 30-game trial isn't enough to make a determination on his future in the Mile High City."

So when would be the right time to either re-sign him or trade him if the opportunity is there? Moving Necas could make sense, but it would also cement the perception the Avalanche were the clear loser in the Rantanen deal.
On the other hand, keeping him would solidify the first line of an already shaky forward core. Once the season is underway, it's anyone's guess if or when a new contract might come, similar to how Rantanen was handled.
