The Colorado Avalanche face an important offseason as they look to return to Stanley Cup contention. Following back-to-back early playoff exits, the front office must retool the roster.

The Avalanche lost Mikko Rantanen at the trade deadline, and their offense clearly suffered as a result. Adding more offensive firepower will need to be a key priority this summer.

The Avalanche are predicted to sign an all-star veteran in the offseason.

Matt Levine from Athlon Sports writes that the upcoming free agent class offers several intriguing options for the Avalanche, but one name stands out. NHL writer Adam Gretz of Bleacher Report identified Colorado as a potential destination for soon-to-be free agent Brad Marchand.
"This would take some creativity on the part of the Avalanche, because they would need to clear out some salary-cap space. But it would make a lot of sense. Or at least some sense. For one, Colorado needs some more scoring depth to help out Nathan MacKinnon, especially after trading Mikko Rantanen ahead of this year's trade deadline....the Avalanche have to be facing some pressure to make a deep playoff run after first-round exits in two of the past three seasons. Somebody with Marchand's playoff track record could be intriguing to them." -Gretz

Bringing Marchand into the fold could give Colorado the boost it needs to return to title contention. The team isn't far removed from its Stanley Cup triumph, and a player of Marchand's caliber could help propel them back to the top.
"Salary issues would be the biggest problem with any Marchand deal, but Colorado could look to do a sign-and-trade with Florida. It remains to be seen how active the Avalanche will be in the Marchand sweepstakes, but his presence on the team could help bring another title to Colorado." -Levine

Marchand thrives in high-pressure moments, and the Avalanche could certainly benefit from his presence. In 20 playoff games this year with the Florida Panthers, he's tallied 8 goals and 10 assists.
