Former Dallas Stars goalie and Colorado Avalanche rival Anton Khudobin unleashes massive criticism on the current state of NHL goaltending.
After 14 NHL seasons and a final stint in Russia,
Khudobin officially retired from professional hockey following the 2023-24 season.
Anton Khudobin calls out the NHL in dramatic fashion.
Jacob Titus from Yahoo Sports writes that 'Dobby' was a fan favourite throughout his career, beloved for his upbeat personality and humour whenever he was mic'd up or interviewed.
Recently, the former Stars netminder joined a Russian podcast, where he shared his candid thoughts on the current state of NHL goaltending.
"Leading up to Khudobin's comments, one of the hosts spoke about how one of his colleagues was talking about how 15 years ago the NHL was filled with star netminders and nowadays it's hard to not want to pull your hair out watching goaltenders." -Titus
Khudobin recalled being demoted to the AHL in 2015-16, despite carrying a .909 save percentage at the time.
"Now I look, even in the NHL, out of the 32 starting goalies, at least 12 to 15 of them are sitting around an .880 save percentage. And I think that's a really weak number." -Khudobin
He noted that between 12 and 15 of the league's 32 starters currently sit near an .880n save percentage, a figure he described as "really weak."
Jake Oettinger, the current starter for Dallas, owns a solid .912 save percentage through 251 NHL games. Still, the 26-year-old posted just a .909 mark last season, which ranked ninth among goalies with at least 35 appearances.
