Former Colorado Avalanche forward Charles Hudon has taken the hockey world by surprise with a stunning and unexpected career move that few saw coming.
Hudon, a two-time AHL All-Star, has officially joined SHL team Djurgårdens IF, according to Johan Svensson of Expressen.
Charles Hudon makes a shocking career change.
Steven McGoey from Yahoo Sports writes that Hudon ranked fifth in AHL scoring last season, recording 20 goals and 64 assists across 67 games with the Ontario Reign.
Hudon already has European experience, having posted 32 points in 33 games with Lausanne HC in Switzerland's National League during the 2020-21 season.
"The 31-year-old sits 188th on the AHL all-time scoring list with 426 points in 503 games split between the Hamilton Bulldogs, St. John's IceCaps, Laval Rocket, Syracuse Crunch, Colorado Eagles, and Ontario Reign." -McGoey
Hailing from Alma, Quebec, Hudon earned AHL All-Rookie Team honours and an All-Star nod in 2014-15, later returning to the All-Star Game in 2019-20.
Across 26 Calder Cup Playoff appearances, Hudon has recorded 14 points, tallying eight goals and six assists. He holds a minus-2 rating, with two of his goals coming on the power play, and has accumulated 20 penalty minutes.
"A fifth round pick of the Montreal Canadiens in 2012, Hudon recorded 14 goals and 41 points in 134 career NHL games with the Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche." -McGoey
It's been a recurring theme this offseason, and Hudon is the latest casualty of the AHL's veteran rule, joining a growing exodus of players like Mike Vecchione,
Chase Priskie, Joey Keane,
Kieffer Bellows, and Noel Hoefenmayer, who've opted to continue their careers in Europe.
