A shocking twist was just unveiled as long time Colorado Avalanche legend defensemen Tyson Barrie announces his retirement.
The announcement comes as a surprise as there were many rumours Barrie was attempting a comeback to the NHL.
Shocking twist as Tyson Barrie announces retirement amid comeback rumours.
Josh Erickson of Pro Hockey Rumours dropped the news that former star Avalanche defensemen Tyson Barrie announces his retirement from the NHL.
"Amid his participation in yesterday's Avalanche alumni game, defenseman Tyson Barrie confirmed to Nathan Rudolph of the DNVR Avalanche podcast that he's retired." -Erickson
Tyson Barrie was a key player during the Avalanche's rise up the Western Conference, unfortunately for him he wasn't there when the Avalanche really took the next steps as contenders.
"The 2014-15 campaign marked Barrie's true coming of age. He broke the 50-point plateau - the first of four times he'd end up doing so in his career - while serving as Colorado's de facto No. 1 option for a good portion of the season with Johnson injured. He would continue averaging north of 21 minutes per game for the remainder of his Colorado tenure, twice earning fringe votes for year-end All-Star honors." -Erickson
Funny enough his biggest contribution to the Avalanche's success was his value on the trade market. In July of 2020 he was traded to Toronto for
Nazem Kadri, and Kadri played a key role in the Avalanche's cup win in 2022.
His career after Colorado was never the same. He struggled in Toronto as he was no longer on the top power play anymore, which only highlighted his defensive struggles as he couldn't hide them with what he brings on the offensive side of the game. Following Toronto he did have some success in Edmonton during a Covid shortened season scoring 48 points in 56 games.
Barrie then found himself on the Nashville Predators, however he was often healthy scratched as his production was deteriorating as time went one. After his contract ended in Nashville, he signed a PTO with Calgary but only managed 13 games until they parted ways.
While the later half of Barrie's career wasn't too successful he started his career as an elite puck mover, and a valuable asset on the power play. Unfortunately for him that was during the dark ages of the Avalanche before MacKinnon and Makar, and once they became contenders he was traded away. Without that trade however who knows if Colorado would have won the cup in 2022.
